Assailants shot dead Maria in Erbil on Sunday night

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The security forces in Kirkuk have detained a perpetrator who killed a 20-year-old woman in Erbil on Sunday, police said.

Spokesman of Police in Kirkuk Lieutenant Colonel Amr Nuri said the “killer” of Maria Sami was detained in the city following an order from the minister of interior.

“After collecting information about the killer who had come to Kirkuk, the security and intelligence services of Kirkuk province launched a search and inspection campaign,” Nuri told Esta Media Network.

“They were able to detain the suspect,” he said.

Iman Sami Maghdid, known as Maria, was shot dead by assailants on Erbil’s 100 meters street late on Sunday, according to police in Erbil.

Police identified Maria’s brother and uncle as the “main suspects” involved in the killing.

The security forces detained her uncle in Erbil following the incident, according to Esta Media Network.

Maria was a well-known TikToker with a platform of over 55.6K followers. She took to social media to rebel against the community’s narratives.

At least 15 women have been killed in the Kurdistan Region since January, according to the parliament’s committee on protection of women’s rights.

In November, the General Directorate to Combat Violence against Women and Family said there were 328 cases of violence against women in the past 10 months, including 40 cases of murdering.
