SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces alongside Hashid al-Shaabi on Wednesday launched an operation in the Ajil mountains in Saladin province, according to a statement.
The Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) said its units, Iraqi army, SWAT forces and federal police participated in the operation to clear the mountainous areas of Islamic State (ISIS) militants.
“The operation aims to search, clear and secure the Ajil mountains and pursue ISIS terrorist remnants,” the PMF added.
In 2017 Baghdad announced victory over the militant group, and attacks in Iraqi cities have since become much rarer, although troops continue to fight ISIS sleeper cells in mountainous and desert areas.
The militants still mount deadly operations, mostly at night and in remote areas.
