SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi forces detained four “terrorists” who planned to attack a prison in Kirkuk, the country’s defense ministry said on Thursday.

In a statement, the defense ministry said the four suspects planned to attack Tasfirat prison in Kirkuk.

“The criminals confessed that they had monitored the place and gathered information to attack the prison,” it added.

“One of them gave forged documents to Daesh so that they can move and hide from the security forces,” the ministry stated, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Islamic State controlled roughly a third of Iraq between 2014 and 2017. Iraqi forces and Kurdish troops backed by U.S.-led Coalition forces as well as Iran-backed Shia militias defeated the militant group in 2017, but its members still roam areas of northern Iraq and northeastern Syria.
