SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdish and Iraqi leaders extend their sincerest congratulations to Bafel Talabani on his re-election as the President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).
The PUK’s fifth congress was held over the weekend in Sulaimani, bringing together PUK members from across Kurdistan and abroad to discuss the party’s future direction and elect a new leadership.
Talabani was re-elected as the party president, and several new faces were added to the party’s leadership council after the successful conclusion of the congress.
On Monday, PUK’s Talabani received a phone call from Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, who congratulated the conclusion of the congress and the election of the new party leadership.
Barzani also expressed his hope that the congress would serve as a starting point for unifying the Kurdish community, promoting cooperation, and strengthening ties and unity between political parties.
In response, PUK’s Talabani expressed his gratitude to President Barzani for his phone call and participation in the congress event.
Talabani also emphasized the PUK’s commitment to the wise policies of the late Kurdish leader, President Mam Jalal Talabani, and stressed the prioritization of Kurdish unity in the party’s policies.
Furthermore, Muthana Al-Samari, the leader of the Al-Azm Alliance, congratulated the PUK on renewing its confidence in Talabani’s presidency.
Similarly, Ammar Al-Hakim, the leader of the Hikma movement, expressed his confidence that the PUK would continue on the path set by the late Mam Jalal following Talabani’s re-election.
He also expressed his hope that the PUK congress would serve as a key to resolving the outstanding issues between the Kurdistan Region government and Iraq.
The PUK, which was founded in 1975 by Talabani’s father, Jalal Talabani, has been a major player in Kurdish politics for decades.
