SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President on Wednesday reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the reforms within the Peshmerga Ministry.
Earlier today, PUK’s Talabani received David Burger, the Deputy Chief of Mission at the United States Embassy, in Baghdad, amid Talabani’s days-long diplomatic journey to Iraq which began last Monday.
Talabani and the US diplomat discussed the overdue elections of the Kurdistan Region and reforms within the Region’s Ministry of Peshmerga, according to a statement released by Talabani’s office.
In the meantime, Talabani explained the PUK’s stance to the US diplomat regarding the elections, as well as efforts to reunify the Peshmerga.
“From the beginning, the PUK supported holding a pure election, in a way that reflects the demands of all sides and brings stability to our Region,” he said, according to the statement.
He also reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the reforms within the Peshmerga Ministry, including all memorandums of understanding that have been signed between the Peshmerga and the US.
However, he stated that “all of the steps to implement the reforms should be done equally, and we reject any attempts to avoid of this goal.”
The PUK President’s words come as recently, the US-led Global Colation which oversees the reforms within and efforts to unify the Peshmerga has released a statement, which confirms the reforms are slowed down by the political divide of the Region’s ruling parties.
