SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A court in Baghdad on Sunday sentenced the murderer of Iraqi security expert and advisor Hisham Al-Hashemi to death.

The man who was charged with the assassination of Hashemi has been sentenced to death by a verdict issued by Rasafa Criminal Court earlier today, the state-run news agency INA confirmed.

47-year-old National security expert Hashemi who also worked as a journalist and then-Prime Minister of Iraq Mustafa Al-Kadhimi’s advisor was gunned down on July 2020.

He was shot by three gunmen outside his home in east Baghdad.

Multiple suspects were arrested a year later over the incident.

Killing of activists is pervasive in Iraq, with many blaming militia groups in the country.
