SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The directorate of the anti-drug agency detained three drug dealers in the capital of the Kurdistan Region, Erbil on Sunday.
Soran’s Anti-Drug agency directorate announced that it detained three drug dealers in Erbil’s city center with the seizure of an amount of narcotic substances.
“At least 250 grams of methamphetamine was seized during the detention,” the directorate said.
In addition to drug dealing the suspects were users as well, it said but did not give further detail.
“The investigation is underway, they will face prosecutions in accordance to ant-drug law,” it added.
Kurdish officials have warned that drug trafficking threatens to become an epidemic if anti-narcotics forces fail to curtail its rise in the Kurdistan Region.
The security forces seized more than 555 kilograms of narcotics including heroin, methamphetamine and hashish in 2020, according to the Region’s directorate of anti-narcotics.
According to security officials, some of the drugs that they seize are imported illegally from Iran.
