Health officials warn of Cholera breakout in Sulaimani

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — There is a high possibility of Cholera breakout in Sulaimani, said the city’s General Director of Health in a press conference on Wednesday.

General Director of Health in Sulaimani Sabah Hawrami said a massive amount of Diarrhea cases have been received at the hospitals in Sulaimani and it might be a Cholera breakout in the city, for that reason required health measure has been taken by health officials.

“According to global standards every six years a cholera breakout erupts, and it is classified as the worst type of Diarrhea,” he said.

“Therefore, there is high doubt on Cholera breakout” he added.

Hawrami further said that so far no case of Cholera has officially been confirmed but the situation indicates that there might be a disease breakout.

“The hospitals in Sulaimani are overwhelmed with diarrhea patients” Hawrami quoted.

We urge citizens to follow the health instructions because the disease is deadly in some stages, and fears sparked over the high amount of the cases, Hawrami said in the press conference.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with Vibrio cholera bacteria, People can get sick when they swallow food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria, The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.

The disease becomes more common during the hot seasons particularly summer in the Kurdistan Region due to high-temperature degrees.
