SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The General Directorate of Asayish (security) in Erbil on Saturday accused the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) of killing a security official in Duhok province.

A group of unidentified gunmen shot Ghazi Salih Alikhan, director of Asayish of the Sarzer border crossing, outside his home in Bigdawda village in Amedi, northeast of Duhok, on Thursday. He later succumbed to his injury in a hospital in Amedi, according to the director of the border crossing.

Sarzer border crossing is located on the border between the Kurdistan Region and Turkey in the district of Amedi.

“After thorough investigation, it was discovered that he was assassinated by the PKK,” the Erbil General Directorate of Asayish said in a statement.

Alikhan was “threatened directly and indirectly” by the PKK in the past, the directorate added, calling on the Kurdistan Region’s people to have a stance against “this terrorist act”.

On Thursday, the Kurdistan Region’s Security Council strongly condemned the “cowardly crime”, vowing to bring perpetrators to justice.
