SULAIMANI (ESTA) — During the past forty-eight hours, 111mm of rain has poured in the Sulaimani region, according to local authorities on Thursday.

Sulaimani on Wednesday witnessed torrential rain and heavy thunderstorms.

The General Director of Metrology told Esta that the overall amount of rain that has been poured this year has reached 699mm.

The number almost doubled compared to the last year, when it only amounted to 378mm up to the same date in 2022.

Last night’s heavy rainfall in the city of Sulaimani caused widespread floods and traffic problems. Education directorates in the district of Chamchaml announced school closures for Thursday.

Despite the heavy thunderstorm that continued for hours in a row, no serious incidents such as human loss or material damages were reported in Sulaimani.

Further, the Directorate of the DarbandiKhan Lake announced that the water levels have risen by 50cm after last night’s pouring rain. Amid the overall rainy session of 2022-2023, the water levels have increased by 13 meters.
