PUK co-president says preserving coexistence is party’s duty

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Co-president of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani said preserving coexistence of nations and religions in the Kurdistan Region is the PUK’s duty. 

Talabani met with Cardinal Louis Raphael Sako, the head of the Chaldean Church, during his fourth-day visit to Baghdad on Wednesday.

The PUK co-president said the Christians in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region had played an important role in building peace and deepening the spirit of coexistence in the region.

Talabani reiterated that the PUK “has full faith in the coexistence of all nations and religions, and maintains that characteristics, which are the one of pillars of democracy and the spirit of coexistence,” his office said in a statement.

“We consider it our duty to protect it and we will be a fierce advocate for protecting the rights and demands of Christians in the Region and Iraq, who are a guanine and inseparable component of this nations,” Talabani was cited as saying.

For his part, Cardinal Sako recalled President Mam Jalal’s efforts, which had gathered all components and parties together and was the renewal of the spirit of harmony and acceptance.

“We have full hope for new PUK leadership, which can work in the same spirit of Mam Jalal and continue this path,” Cardinal Sako was quoted as saying. Top of Form
