Iraqi PM orders health minister to quit after Baghdad hospital fire

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi on Sunday ordered health minister and two other officials to step down, after a fire at a hospital in Baghdad killed 82 people.

The fire sparked by an oxygen tank explosion erupted at the Ibn Khatib hospital in the Diyala Bridge area in Baghdad on Saturday.

The Iraqi interior minister said 82 people and 110 others injured in the fire.

The Iraqi prime minister chaired a special session of the Council of Ministers to discuss the accident at the hospital.

Kadhimi ordered the health minister, the governor of Baghdad and general director of health in Rasafa to quit over the hospital fire, the premier’s office said in a statement.

He also ordered investigations into the officials, the statement read. Kadhimi also urged the completion of investigations into the fire within five days.
