PUK co-leader expresses condolences to Iraqis over hospital fire

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Co-leader Bafel Talabani on Sunday expressed condolences to Iraqis over a fire that erupted in a hospital in Baghdad.

The fire sparked by an oxygen tank explosion erupted at the Ibn Khatib hospital in the Diyala Bridge area in Baghdad on Saturday, killing 82 people and wounding 110 others.

“I heard with deep sorrow the fire incident at the Ibn Khatib hospital in Baghdad,” Talabani said in a statement, expressing the PUK’s support and assistance to the Iraqi government.

“All the Kurdistan Region’s health capabilities are ready to serve the wounded and to [provide] any other assistance,” Talabani stated.

Over the incident, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi ordered on Sunday the health minister, the governor of Baghdad and the general director of al-Rasafa to step down.

He also ordered investigations into the officials and urged the completion of investigations into the fire within five days.
