SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A member of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) was killed in an Islamic State (ISIS) attack in Khanaqin district, a security source said late on Wednesday.
State news agency NINA cited a security source as saying that ISIS militants attacked PMF fighters in the village of Dakat on the outskirts of Khanaqin on Wednesday night.
One Hashid al-Shaabi fighter was killed and three others were wounded in the militant attack, the security source added.
Commander of Peshmerga’s Brigade 3 Dler Shkur told Esta Media Network that the militants attacked a checkpoint of Hashid al-Shaabi in the area.
The Peshmerga commander added that one PMF fighter was killed and two others were wounded.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
