SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A group of Islamic State (ISIS) militants attacked the Iraqi military with sniper rifles in Jalawla sub-district early on Wednesday, a security source said.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the source told Esta Media Network that the militants attacked the Iraqi military at 08:00 a.m. on Wednesday as the army was searching and clearing areas in Jalawla sub-district.

At least three Iraqi soldiers were wounded by ISIS snipers, the source said.

The Iraqi military has launched an operation to cleanse several areas of ISIS militants in the sub-district.

Jalawla, or Gulala in Kurdish language, is a disputed area claimed by both the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
