SULAIMANI (ESTA) — One person was killed when an explosive remnant of war exploded in Chamchamal district on Wednesday, according to a police source.

A source from the directorate of police in Chamchamal said a mortar shell exploded after two people touched the shell near Bani Maqan area, west of Chamchamal city.

The explosion killed a 34-year-old man and wounded another, the source told Esta Media Network on condition of anonymity.

“The two were a father and a son … They were iron sellers. They touched the mortar shell and it exploded,” the source said.

Some areas in the Kurdistan Region remain littered with hundreds of explosive remnants of war including mortar rounds and landmines, some of which belong to Baathist era in the 1980s.
