Specialists discover ancient archaeological site in Sulaimani

Dozens of sharpened sticks that date back to the Middle Stone Age have been discovered at the archeological site by Kurdish and British specialists.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Sulaimani Directorate of Archaeology in cooperation with specialists from the United Kingdoms’s Reading University discovered an ancient archaeological site on Saturday. 

The site is located near Zarzi village in the vicinity of Chami Rezan in the Dukan district of Sulaimani province.

several age-old antiquities and instruments have been found so far, including sharpened sticks that were used for hunting purposes.

Researchers say the site is about 11,500 years old dating back to the Mesolithic period or the Middle Stone Age.

During that age, people came to this area for seasonal occupations such as hunting due to the area’s fertility and lived there for a few months every year

Excavation is still underway at the site as more artifacts and antiquities are believed to still remained at the spot

In the meantime, Sulaimani governorate Haval Abubakar revealed that at this moment, there are at least 18 foreign teams in Sulaimani specializing in archaeology for similar purposes.
