SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, Prime Minister Masour Barzani, and several political parties on Thursday sent congratulatory messages to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) on the 48th anniversary of the party’s founding.

In a phone call with the PUK President, Barzani offered his warm congratulations, expressing wishes for success, according to a statement released by his office.

The Region’s president also hoped this anniversary might prompt “national unity between the political parties,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani hoped the political parties to cooperate and sense their historical responsibility to serve the high national interests on the occasion of the PUK anniversary.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Politburo also issued a congratulatory message to the PUK, stressing coordination and unity between the entire political parties of Kurdistan to overcome the challenges.

The PUK was founded on June 1, 1975, by the late Mam Jalal Talabani and other cofounders, Nawshirwan Mustafa, Ali Askari, Fuad Masum, and others. Soon after its establishment, the party began to engage in an armed struggle with the oppressive regime of Ba’ath in Iraq over Kurdish rights for autonomy.

PUK claims that it struggles for democracy, peace, self-determination, and human rights for the Kurdish nation.
