SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has decided to allocate a budget to help students of universities and institutes in the Kurdistan Region, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

Hundreds of students in universities and institutes continued to protest in the Kurdistan Region on Wednesday against the suspension of their monthly stipends.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has suspended the distribution of students’ stipends since 2015, when the Region was hit by an economic crisis due to a drop in oil prices, the fight against Islamic State (ISIS) and the wave of displaced people and refugees who headed to Kurdish for shelter.

Students were paid 30,000-100,000 Iraqi dinars ($20.5-$68.5) per month.

“The council of ministers has decided to allocate grants for students of universities and institutes during today’s meeting,” Samir Hawrami, spokesman of KRG deputy prime minister, told Esta Media Network.

The students has been protesting in Erbil and Sulaimani since Sunday.

Meanwhile, head of the parliament’s committee of education Abdulsalam Dolamari said the KRG had allocated a budget for the ministry of higher education and scientific research to solve the issues of dormitories and to serve and assist students who are in need.
