SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) slammed the New Generation Movement for not taking a position against Sulaimani drone attack, and “siding with Ankara”.
An apparent Turkish drone strike hit the vicinity of Sulaimani International Airport last Friday without causing casualties and damages.
The attack was carried out while the commander-in-chief of the Kurdish-led Syria Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, was on a visit to Sulaimani airport, meeting with his Kurdish counterparts, the Counter-Terrorism Units of the ruling Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Global Coalition commanders.
The drone attack caused an uproar among the PUK and in the broader Kurdistan as well, strongly denouncing the assault.
The official media of the PUK released a report on Monday, slamming the Kurdistan Region’s New Generation Movement, a proclaimed opposition party, for not taking a position against the “assassination” attempt of SDF’s commander Mazloum Abdi in Sulaimani.
The PUK’s report stated that the New Generation Movement and its leader Shaswar Abdullwahid “are working on misleading the facts through media about Sulaimani drone attack which was meant to assassinate Mazloum Abdi.”
It also added that the New Generation movement had formed an alliance with Tavgari Azadi faction, which is a linked organization to the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), during the Iraqi parliamentary elections in 2018.
“However, the New Generation Movement seems to have shifted its side to Ankara to get pardoned, following the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s (KDP) role as a middleman to link them with Turkey,” the report added.
The PKK, which has led an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, is considered a “terrorist” organization by Turkey, the United States, and the European Union.
