Kurdistan President calls on Baghdad to ‘respect’ Kurdistan Region

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Baghdad must respect the Kurdistan Region in accordance with the constitution, said the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, on Saturday in Baghdad.

Barzani delivered a speech amid the 20th anniversary of the assassination of an Iraqi prominent political figure, Mohammed Baqir Al-Hakim, in the Iraqi capital.

During his speech, the president said, “The constitution is a social and political contract between all components of Iraq and it should not be ignored.”

The president also pointed out the Kurdistan Region’s “support” to the incumbent Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed al-Sudani.

“We support Sudani from the point of view of the implementation of the Iraqi constitution as well as on the foundation of forming a federal government,” The president added.

The President called on Baghdad “to respect” the Region and other parts of Iraq in accordance with the constitution, according to the speech.

“There is no doubt Iraq will be stronger by the implementation of the constitution,” he said.

The President also voiced confidence that there is an opportunity to restore the Iraqi position for the better.

“From our perspective, the Region and other areas of Iraq are not enemies of each other,” and “we need a democratic system that respects all religions and nations,” the president continued.
