SULAIMANI (ESTA) — At least five people died and 32 others were injured after a gas leak explosion in the city of Duhok, Kurdistan Region, and the governor announced two days of national mourning over the incident.
An LPG gas cylinder situated on a building where students used to stay instead of dorms exploded and caused dozens of casualties at midnight hours Tuesday.
Among Duhok’s gas blast casualties who lost their lives were three police officers, a student, and a worker, according to governor Ali Tatatar.
The blast mirrored the same incident that earlier occurred in the city of Sulaimani where the same LPG cylinder exploded and caused the structural collapse of a three-story house, killing 15 as well as injuring 12 who were members of one family on Thursday.
Following Duhok’s gas blast incident which shortly came after Sulaimani’s deadly gas blast, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister ordered authorities to ban the gas heating system, calling for immediate investigations.
Moreover, the Kurdistan Region Council of Ministers is set to convene today over the repeated gas blasts in Sulaimani and Duhok, Esta has learned.
In the meantime, Kurdistan Region top officials soon sent out condolence messages to the people of Duhok, calling for a precise probe into the incident.
