SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Hiwa Cancer Hospital in Sulaimani on Monday said that in only 24 hours as many as 40 people have been diagnosed with cancer.
Local health officials, particularly in Hiwa cancer hospital warned of the sparking numbers of cancer diagnoses among citizens in such a short term.
A statistic from the hospital released has indicated that only on the previous Sunday, 1029 people were received by them.
“The hospital conducted 3500 variation tests, and as many as 40 people have been diagnosed with cancer on Sunday,” it said.
Pointing out to one-day operations inside the well-known Hiwa hospital for cancer treatments, it further said that “257 patients have been hospitalized in the various sections, and among whom 85 of them were in the emergency section.”
At least 205 patients have given different radiograph tests only in that 24 hours, according to the hospital. In the meantime, it carried out chemical treatments for 143 patients.
Health officials have warned that the number of infections with cancer is very high comparing with the number of population, which is nearly 6 million now.
Back then, in 2021, Member of the Committee of Health, Environment and Consumer Rights Galawezh Obeid said, 90 percent of those diagnosed with cancer were residents of the Kurdistan Region and the other 10 percent were residents of southern Iraq.
“The most widespread type of cancer is lung cancer in men, followed by breast cancer in women,” Obeid added. “Kidney and blood cancers are in second and third place.”
Hiwa Hospital is a public hospital located in Sulaimani city, where cancer patients throughout Iraq are treated.
In 2020, as many as 3050 people were diagnosed with cancer in Erbil and 2,500 others were diagnosed in Sulaimani and Halabja, according to the report. Up to 700 cases of cancer were recorded in Duhok.
