PUK President, CJTF-OIR Commander discuss Peshmerga-related issues, war against IS remnants

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) Bafel Talabani on Saturday received Matthew McFarlane, the Commander of the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve (CJRF-OIR), in Sulaimani, where the two discussed Peshmerga-related issues and war against the Islamic State remnants.

A press release said that Talabani met Maj. Gen. McFarlane, the pair emphasized bolstering the coordination and its continuity between the Kurdistan Region forces and the Global coalition forces, aiming to maintain the region’s security.

The meeting was also attended by a number of security and Peshmerga officials including the Director of the Protection and Information/Information agency as well as the Chief of staff of the Peshmerga 70Forces and the Director of the Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG).

They also discussed the latest developments in the reform process and unification of the Peshmerga forces and war against the Islamic State terrorist remnants.

President Talabani has extended his congratulations for the occasion of McFarlane’s assignment on his new duty which is related to the reforms within the Ministry of Peshmerga, according to the press release.

“In keen, we look at the unification of the Peshmerga forces and building a well-built national force, that would have capabilities to protect the Region and high interests,” PUK President said.

“For that reason, both equality and equilibrium must take into consideration,” Talabani added.

Talabani further asked the Global Coalition Forces to continue improving the military capabilities of the Peshmerga forces, he demanded they expand supports that they provided.
