SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The security forces (Asayish) detained three suspects over drug trafficking, in the northwest of Sulaimani province, said the general directorate of Raparin security in a statement on Tuesday.
Suspects had Seven kilograms of Narcotic drugs that were intended to import illegally from Iran to the Kurdistan Region however, it has been seized by the security forces in Raparin district, according to the statement.
“The suspects had opium, hidden inside gas cylinders,” it said.
The statement further said, “Two other suspects were also arrested separately by our forces, who had 350 grams of methamphetamine”.
“Another suspect was detained in Qaldize district detained with 50 grams of methamphetamine” it added.
Drug trafficking has increasingly become more frequent in the Kurdistan Region, in particular in the border areas between the Region and Iran.
Kurdish officials have warned that drug trafficking threatens to become an epidemic if anti-narcotics forces fail to curtail its rise in the Kurdistan Region.
On May 29, one of the most wanted drug dealers has been arrested by anti-drug reinforcements in the Kurdistan Region’s Soran administration, He supervised a large band of importing and spreading drugs from Iran.
