Iraq’s Salih stresses need to confront terrorism, climate change

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi President Barham Salih on Tuesday stressed the need to confront terrorism and climate change in the region.

Salih met with British ambassador to Iraq Mark Bryson-Richardson in Baghdad on Tuesday, the Iraqi presidency said in a statement.

The Iraqi president stressed on the importance of facing challenges of terrorism and climate change in the region, according to the statement.

The two sides also stressed the need to support dialogue and meetings to end crises, ease tensions and take any step that would enhance regional peace and stability, the statement read.

The Middle East has always been battered by dust and sandstorms, but they have become more frequent and intense in recent years.

Thousands of people were hospitalized in Iraq due to the dust storms, which authorities blame on climate change.

In April, an environment ministry official warned that Iraq could face “272 days of dust” a year over the next two decades.
