Divorce rate rose in Kurdistan Region in 2021: judicial council

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Divorce rate has increased in the Kurdistan Region in compare with the same period last year, the judicial council said on Monday.

The Region’s Supreme Judicial Council released statistics of divorce and marriage in Kurdistan.

As many as 8,810 cases of divorce were logged in the Region in 2021, the judicial council said, while it was 7,144 cases in 2020.

There were 4,043 divorces in Erbil province in 2021, according to the statistics. In Sulaimani, as many as 4,767 cases were recorded while 1,796 cases were registered in Duhok.

The rate of marriage also increased to 54,837 cases last year, the judicial council said. It was 46,929 cases in 2020.

It further said there were also 73 cases of permission to marry second wife in Erbil, 21 cases in Duhok and seven more in Sulaimani.
