SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Wednesday agreed that the Kurdistan parliamentary election should be held on time, according to a joint statement.

A delegation from the PUK and KDP held a meeting in Sulaimani city to discuss Kurdistan’s constitution, elections and electoral commission.

“Both sides agreed that the Kurdistan parliamentary elections should be held on time and national preparations should be made,” the statement said.

The parties also agreed that there should be joint understanding on the legal and political mechanism to hold the elections.

The Kurdistan Region held parliamentary elections in September 2018. The elections are held every four years in the Region. A minimum quota of 30% of seats in the 111-seat house is reserved for women and 11 seats for parties representing minorities.

“Both sides agreed to work on strengthening people’s trust in elections and the process should be transparent and successful,” they said.

The two parties will hold further meetings next week, the statement said.
