No case of Omicron variant recorded in Kurdistan: health minister

File – Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Health Saman Barzinji speaks to reporters

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Minister of Health Saman Barzinji said on Tuesday no cases of the new Omicron coronavirus variant have been detected in the Kurdistan Region.

The minister told Esta Media Network that the health ministry was monitoring the situation, airports and tourists arriving in the Region.

“No infection with Omicron COVID-19 variant has been recorded in the Kurdistan Region,” he said.

The discovery of Omicron has sparked worries around the world that it could resist vaccinations and prolong the nearly two-year-old COVID-19 pandemic.

The WHO and scientists have also said it could take weeks to understand whether Omicron is likely to cause severe illness or escape protection against immunity induced by vaccines.
