SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Islamic State (ISIS) militants wounded two people near Makhmour district in southwest of Erbil late on Friday, the Region’s counter-terrorism service said.

The militants set up a checkpoint near the village of Kandar on Makhmour road on Friday night, the counter-terrorism service said in a statement.

Two people were injured and a number of others were captured, it added.

Meanwhile, Shafaq news cited a security source as saying the militants wearing Iraqi military uniform set up the checkpoint on Makhmour-Erbil road, southeast of Mosul.

The militants “kidnapped two people … injured three others who were traveling near the area,” the security source added.

Recently, ISIS militants have increased attacks and activities in several Iraqi provinces.

On Wednesday, the militants fired mortar shells Adla village and detonated two transmission power towers in Makhmour district.

The federal government announced victory over ISIS by the end of 2017 after Iraqi and Kurdish forces backed by U.S.-led Coalition regained control of areas once captured by the militant group.

Despite its defeat, ISIS still poses a threat to the security and stability of the country as there are still sleeper cells in Iraq.
