11 Kurdish, Iraqi citizens have been jailed for months in Dagestan, says refugee rights activist

SULAIMANI (ESTA) —  A Refugee rights activist on Sunday said that several asylum seekers from the Kurdistan Region and Iraq have been held in custody in the Republic of Dagestan for nine months, urging authorities to offer helps. 

Bakir Ali, the head of the Returned Asylum Seekers Association told Esta Meda Network that eleven Iraqi asylum seekers have been held in custody in Dagestan.

“Among the Iraqi asylum seekers, several Kurdistan Region citizens included as well,” he said.

According to Ali’s words, they have made many attempts to release the Kurdish asylum seekers in Dagestan through the channels of the Kurdistan Region authorities.

“We have been disappointed, and as a result, we tried to reach the Russian embassy in Baghdad by contacting the President of the Republic of Iraq,” he added.

He also revealed that the Kurdish and Iraqi asylum seekers were detained by the Dagestani authorities while attempting to cross the borders to Europe.

“There is no exciting news up to this point regarding those ayslum seekers,” Ali noted.
