SULAIMANI (ESTA) — An attack on a funeral procession in Iraq’s Saladin province has claimed a number of victims on Friday, according to Iraq’s military.

Iraqi security media cell said the “terrorist” attack in Yathrib district resulted in a “number of victims” but did not provide specific figures.

A security source told national Iraqi news agency (NINA) that 13 people were killed and 18 others were injured in the attack.

Yathrib police chief Jassim Mohammed said four policemen and three citizens were killed and 19 others were wounded in the attack, according to state news agency INA.

A security delegation including deputy commander of Iraq’s joint operations arrived in the district of Yathrib on Saturday to investigate the attack, INA reported.

The Associated Press cited a security source as saying the attack had been perpetrated by the Islamic State (ISIS) group.

Northern Iraq has been a hotspot for ISIS activity since their territorial defeat in 2017 by Iraqi and Kurdish forces with assistance with the U.S.-led coalition forces.

Iraqi forces routinely carry out anti-ISIS operations in the rugged mountainous northern region and the deserts of western Iraq where they are to be holed up.
