SULAIMANI (ESTA) — A moderately strong earthquake struck the border region between the Kurdistan Region and Iran on Tuesday, according to European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The EMSC said the epicenter of the quake with 5.3 magnitude was located six kilometers northeast of Penjwen district in the Kurdistan Region and 58 km southeast of Baneh in northwest Iran.
The earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers, it added.
The earthquake also felt in several other places in the Kurdistan Region, including Sulaimani city.
Penjwen mayor Zana Rahman told Esta Media Network that a number of people injured in the earthquake in the district, while several other places including hospital and mosques were damaged.
“We are still gathering information with authorities in Garmik and Nalparez sub-districts because we are worried about the villages, where houses were made of mud and woods,” he said.
