PUK president tells Kurdish artists: ‘fight oppression and injustice through your profession’

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan President, Bafel Talabani, called on the Kurdish artists to fight oppression and injustice through their profession.

“Art should not be politicized,” Talabani told a group of well-known Kurdish artists after he received them in Sulaimani’s Dabashan area on Saturday.

During the meeting, Talabani also told them “Do not allow anyone to interfere in your job. Be critical and fight against injustice and oppression through your art,” and “That is one of the duties of art itself,” according to a statement from Talabani’s media office.

In the meantime, Talabani and the artists discussed the issues and obstacles within the area of Kurdish art, the office added in the statement.

Moreover, Talabani has made several “vital” decisions concerning the situation of the artists and art in the Kurdistan Region, reiterating his support.

The Kurdish leader also told the artists “We will form a dedicated council in the vary artistic fields,” and “together make great steps.”
