SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iraqi President Barham Salih arrived in Kuwait on Thursday (October 1) to offer his condolence for the death of Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah.
Sheikh Sabah died on Tuesday aged 91, plunging his country into mourning for a leader regarded by many Gulf Arabs as a savvy diplomatic operator and a humanitarian champion.
The president accompanied by a delegation was welcomed by new Kuwaiti Emir Nawaf al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah upon his arrival.
The Iraqi government on Tuesday announced one-day mourning for Sheikh Sabah’s death.
Kuwait’s new ruler, Sheikh Nawaf, took the oath of office in parliament on Wednesday, pledging to work for the Gulf Arab state’s prosperity and stability and calling for uniting ranks in the face of challenges.
Sheikh Nawaf takes the reins of the small wealthy nation, which holds the world’s seventh-largest oil reserves, at a time when low crude prices and the coronavirus have strained the finances of a country with a cradle-to-grave welfare system.
