The Anfal crime lasted 197 days and was carried out in several ways. In a tragedy unprecedented in human history، 182،000 people، including old، young، women، and children، were buried alive.
The crime was committed by the former Iraqi regime in several stages and covered several areas، including the surrounding villages and districts (Jafayat Valley، Qaradag، Garmian، Zey Bachuk Watershed، Shaqlawa and Rawandz، Balisan Valley، Badinan).
According to the report by Human Rights Watch، the eight stages of Anfal were as follows:
February 21، 1988، to March 18، 1988: The first phase of the Anfal campaign began in the Jafayat Valley.
March 14–22، 1988: The second phase of the Anfal campaign began in the Qaradag region.
March 31، 1988 to April 14، 1988: The third phase of the Anfal campaign began in Garmian.
April 18، 1988، to April 20، 1988: The fourth phase of the Anfal campaign began in Askar، Goptapa، Shuan، Qala، Swaka، and Koya plains.
May 24، 1988، to August 31، 1988: The fifth، sixth، and seventh phases of the Anfal campaign began in Shaqlawa and Rawandz districts.
August 25، 1988 to September 6، 1988: The eighth phase of the Anfal campaign began in Badinan.
The former regime named the campaign Surah Anfal، which means the gains of war، and was used to describe the military campaign led by Ali Hassan Majid to destroy the Kurdish people and plunder areas.
The Andfal process lasted from February 23 to September 6، 1988. In Kurdish society، the word Anfal means all the crimes and genocide committed against the Kurdish people throughout history.
