PUK and KDP to discuss their differences in Sulaimani City

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) are set to meet on Tuesday amid easing the tensions.

The PUK and KDP meeting is set to take place in the city of Sulaimani, where both parties’ politburos discuss their recent disagreements, according to Saadi Ahmed Pira, a PUK Politburo member on Monday.

The PUK-KDP political relationships have been severely strained to a point where PUK ministers boycotted the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), forcing the postponement of regional elections, which are now scheduled for Nov. 18.

Last week, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and his Deputy Qubad Talabani met and agreed to work together to overcome their differences, according to statements posted on their Twitter accounts.

The breakthrough came days after a U.S. foreign ministry delegation, including Barbara Leaf, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, visited Erbil and met with leaders from both parties.
