KDP’s Masrour warns Kurdistan President to not mediate to ease PUK-KDP strained relations – source

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) deputy President Masrour Barzani has warned the Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani to not mediate to ease the tensions with the rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), an informed source on Wednesday told Esta.

KDP’s Masrour gave an ultimatum to Kurdistan President Nechirvan Barzani to make no further efforts to bring the rival parties together, according to the source.

“Whenever there is an effort to bring the PUK and KDP together, Masrour Barzani targets the effort and disrupts it,” the source said. “Masrour impedes the national peace between the PUK and KDP.”

Relationships between the ruling PUK and KDP have been critically strained throughout the last months.

The Deputy Prime Minister who also leads the PUK ministerial team, Qubad Talabani, has boycotted his office at the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and stopped to attend cabinet meetings since October last year.

The PUK ministerial team has taken the same stance since then due to mounting tensions with the rival Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

The PUK attribute the reason to the KRG led by the KDP’s Masrour Barzani, blaming Barzani for withholding the Sulaimani province budget and rejecting sending the financial allocations.

Moreover, The PUK and KDP have been at loggerheads over several additional issues related to the Kurdistan Region including amendments to the election law.
