SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Sheikh Adham Barzani, a former senior official of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), on Monday claimed the head of his guards has been jailed for more than four months in Erbil.
In a statement, Barzani stated, “Commander Farid Abdul Aziz who is the head of my guards has been jailed for 135 days in Erbil only because he is my friend and brother.”
He also mentioned a person anonymously that has repeatedly notified the commander “he will be given ranks and position and released if he cut ties with Barzani.”
Veteran Kurdish politician Sheikh Adham Barzani has held several senior positions in the ranks of the KDP. He was the former President of the KDP leadership council in Sulaimani.
In protest of the KDP policies, Barzani announced his resignation from the party in April 2021.
Barzani is also the cousin of the KDP President and former president of the Kurdistan Region Masoud Barzani.
Furthermore, Barzani in the statement mentioned that he has been banned from returning to his family and his hometown for 294 days, criticizing the political authority for disregarding democracy and freedom.
“This is the result of having certain national stances of mine,” he added.
Barzani also made an urgent call to release his head of guards without any conditions, according to the statement.
November last year Erbil security forces captured Barzani’s head of guards in Erbil’s Barzan area. At the time, the forces took him to an unknown destination in the Mergasour sub-district.
