SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Stray dog-catching operation intensified in Sulaimani, the municipality on Monday announced.
Local authorities said they have relaunched the stray dog-catching operation in coordination with the related institutions including the Department of Forest Police as well as the General Directorate of veterinary.
In many countries around the world, stray dogs still represent a huge burden for society.
Sulaimani municipality has intensified its efforts to catch stray dogs loitering the streets downtown and in various neighborhoods.
“The catching operation would commence step by step, then the stray dogs will be transferred to dedicated shelters in Sulaimani’s Arbat town,” the municipality said.
The operation which commenced is part of the local authority’s efforts to curb dog-bite cases or traffic accidents. According to their words, they received complaints from citizens.
“The operation aims at protecting and ensuring their safety,” it said, referring to the stray dogs.
In January, a shelter in Arbat which is located on the outskirts of the city designed to take in thousands of stray dogs from the streets was opened. There are around 400 dogs settled into their new home.
Male and female dogs are separated from each other to prevent them from reproducing, according to officials at the shelter.
