Authorities in Sulaimani close steel factory after blast injured 13

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Authorities in Sulaimani have closed a steel factory following an explosion which injured 13 people, mayor’s office said on Sunday.

In a statement, the mayor’s office said the committees of the Sulaimani Central District had decided to close Master Steel Factory due to failure to provide safety for its labors.

As many as 13 people were injured in a blast at the Master steel factory in Tanjaro area in Sulaimani province on April 9. One of the wounded succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Sulaimani.

“There were no safety and health conditions in the factory, such as the lack of ambulance, sonar and devices that detect ammunition,” the mayor’s office said.

The factory’s owner will also face legal measures, it added.

It was the second incident at the factory since last year. One laborer was killed and three others were wounded in a blast at the factory in April 2021.

In December, a 45-year-old laborer was killed and another was injured after an explosion occurred at Kawrgosk steel factory in Erbil.
