SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Rescue teams on Tuesday in Baghdad recovered the bodies of a mother and a child under the rubble of a building that collapsed on Saturday.
Earlier on Saturday, the four-storey National Laboratory building which housed medical clinics suspiciously collapsed in the Iraqi capital’s popular Karrda district.
Civil defense teams confirmed two dead that day while saying that at least 18 people were in the building, search and rescue operation is still underway.
After three days, the bodies of a mother and a child were recovered by the civil defense teams.
So far 13 survivors have been rescued but still, three are missing.
It was not immediately clear what brought down the building, no possible cause has been identified.
Karrda, the district where the incident occurred is known for its cafes, and restaurants, and is popular with expatriates and locals alike situated in western Baghdad.
Officials and MPs from the Iraqi parliament urged an immediate investigation of the incident.
An Iraqi news outlet on Saturday reported that engineers have warned ten years ago that the bundling is in danger of collapse.
An investigation ordered by Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, according to Iraqi media. Kadhimi suggested that the building permit issued by previous administrations also has to be examined.
