SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Chamchamal district in Sulaimani province has reported 21 new cases of Cholera as the illness continues to spread according to health officials on Monday.
Chamchaml’s health directorate announced in a statement that inside one of the district’s Mosques no chlorine in its water was detected therefore it was found inappropriate for drinking.
“21 new Cholera cases have been recorded after they received the test samples for the illness suspects,” it said.
“A medical team from the directorate has been tasked to test the consumable water in Chamchamal mosques, we found out none of them are suitable for drinking, it did not possess any chlorine” it added.
Earlier on June 19 Sulaimani governorate confirmed Cholera outbreak as the first city throughout Iraq, and a state of emergency was declared in the city.
General Director of Sulaimani health Sabah Hawrami has blamed the Kurdistan Region government over the illness outbreak saying it was caused by the Region’s ministry of municipality’s failure to manage water reservoirs in the city.
“The government’s failure to manage Sulaimani water supplies is the major reason for the illness outbreak, thus linked to the irresponsibility of the Kurdistan Region municipality ministry. They had failed to maintain the cleanness of the water reservoirs” Hawrami said.
Cholera is a bacterial disease usually spread through contaminated water. it causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. Left untreated, cholera can be fatal within hours, even in previously healthy people.
the illness becomes more common during the hot seasons particularly summer in the Kurdistan Region due to high-temperature degrees.
