Kurdish provinces in Iran report five suspected cases of Cholera – state TV

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Iran reported five suspected cases of Cholera in Rojhalat, Sanandaj, state news agency (IRNA) said on Tuesday.

IRNA cited a medical source in Sanandai University as saying that, five suspected cases have been reported after they returned from the Kurdistan Region.

Four of the suspected cases are from Marivan and the other one from Saqez, overall they are reported in Kurdish provinces, according to the source.

“Samples have been taken from the suspects and transmitted to the central laboratory in order to confirm,” it said.

The source further stated initial ways of deterring the Cholera outbreak said, “Measures have been launched in those areas that use stream waters, vegetable consumption has been prohibited in the restaurants as well”

The recent Cholera outbreak in the Kurdistan Region back to Sulaimani city, after the health officials said, diarrhea and vomiting are spreading rapidly among the locals.

Subsequently on Sunday, the general director of Sulaimani health confirmed the Cholera outbreak following returning the test samples of those who suffered from diarrhea and vomiting, from the Baghdad laboratory.

“At least 56 cases were tested positive in Sulaimani,” he said.

So far eight deaths were reported from the illness, according to the officials.

The government’s failure to manage Sulaimani water supplies is the major reason for the illness outbreak, thus linked to the irresponsibility of the Kurdistan Region municipality ministry. They had failed to maintain the cleanness of the water reservoirs, the Sulaimani health director said in a press conference on Monday.

Cholera is a bacterial disease usually spread through contaminated water. Cholera causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. Left untreated, cholera can be fatal within hours, even in previously healthy people.

The illness is often mild or without symptoms, but can sometimes be severe and life-threatening.

Cholera becomes more common during the hot seasons particularly summer in the Kurdistan Region due to high-temperature degrees.
