Kurdistan Region reports second case of Congo Fever

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Second case of Congo fever was reported in Duhok province of the Kurdistan Region on Wednesday, said Esta Media Network reporter.

Esta’s report said in Duhok, a 22-year-old girl from Akre district was confirmed as infected after sending her test to Baghdad and returned just today.

“This is the second case of Congo fever reported in Duhok” Esta’s reporter said.

On Saturday Iraq’s ministry of health said the death toll from Congo fever in the country rose to 23 and as many as 136 cases of the severe disease had been recorded as well.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever causes severe hemorrhaging, with people usually catching it through contact with the blood of infected animals, according to the World Health Organization.

The fever has a fatality rate of between 10 and 40 percent of all cases.

The disease has been endemic to Iraq since 1979, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). At times, small outbreaks have been reported, with the last outbreak happening in 2021 with 18 cases confirmed in Dhi Qar and Nineveh provinces.
