Two members of local force killed in Turkish strike on Makhmour camp

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Two members of a local force were killed in a Turkish airstrike on a refugee camp in Makhmour district, southwest of Erbil, the group said on Wednesday.

Turkish warplanes bombed targets in Rostam Judi refugee camp in Makhmour late on Tuesday.

The Makhmour Protection Units, a local force that guards the camp, said two of its members were killed in the attack and dozens of others including civilians were wounded.

“The wounded are receiving medical treatment now,” it said in a statement.

The camp was established in the 1990s when thousands of Kurds from Turkey crossed the border in a movement Ankara says was deliberately provoked by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Turkey separately carried out airstrikes against what the defense ministry said targets belonging to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Sinjar mountains on Tuesday night.

In Syria, the Turkish warplanes bombed Derik city in Hasakah province.

“Terrorists’ shelters, caves, tunnels, ammunition depots and so-called headquarters and training camps were targeted,” the ministry statement said, without specifying exactly when the strikes occurred.

Turkey regards the PKK and YPG as “terrorist groups”.
