Bafel Jalal Talabani in Baghdad for talks with Iraqi parties

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Bafel Jalal Talabani arrived in Baghdad on Monday to hold talks with Iraqi parties.

Talabani accompanied by a Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) delegation is expected to meet with Iraqi parties to discuss the formation of a new government in Baghdad.

His visit to Baghdad came one day after the PUK Leadership Council decided to provide “full support” to succeed its candidate Barham Salih in competition to win the second term of Iraq’s presidency, according to the party’s statement.

On January 9, Sadrist movement led by Moqtada Al-Sadr, together with Sunni Taqaddum alliance and Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), re-elected Mohammed al-Halbousi as parliament speaker opposed by the Iran-aligned camp with a solid majority.

Parliament must in the coming weeks choose the country’s president, who will call on the largest parliamentary alliance to form a government, a process that will be dominated by the Sadrist Movement whoever it chooses to work with.
