SULAIMANI (ESTA) — An explosion hit a convoy of Peshmerga forces in Kifri district in Iraq’s Diyala province on Sunday, Esta Media Network reporter said.
The reporter said the improvised explosive device (IED) blew up as a convoy of the Peshmerga forces passed by the bomb in Zinana sub-district.
There were no casualties, but a Peshmerga vehicle was damaged, according to the reporter.
A security source told the reporter that another bomb was found in the area and that a bomb disposal unit in the Peshmerga ministry went to the area to defuse it.
In the last few days, Peshmerga forces had been attacked by Islamic State (ISIS) militants in the disputed territories claimed by both Erbil and Baghdad.
Two members of the Peshmerga forces were killed in an attack near Prde town, south of Erbil, on October 31.
Kurdish officials have repeatedly warned that ISIS militants are using a “security vacuum” between the Iraqi and Kurdish forces to carry out attacks in the disputed territories.
On Saturday, Iraqi and Peshmerga forces launched a joint operation against ISIS remnants in Nineveh province.
The Ministry of Peshmerga said the operation was completed “successfully” and that the areas of Kushafi Saru and Kushafi Khwaru were cleared of the militants.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017 but the militants have regrouped in the Hamrin mountain range which extends into the northern provinces – an area described by officials as a “triangle of death”.
