Macron reaffirms support for Kurdistan in letter to Kurdish president

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani reads a letter which he received from French President Emmanuel Macron, September 30, 2021.

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani on Thursday received a letter from French President Emmanuel Macron, who paid a visit to the Region last month.

“I received a letter from my friend, French President Emmanuel Macron on his recent trip to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” Barzani said in a tweet, after the French consul general in Erbil delivered the letter to him.

“His visit to Erbil underlined strong and historic ties between our nations. I remain grateful for France’s continued support to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” he added.

Macron paid a visit to the Kurdistan Region on August 29 and held talks with Barzani, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Parliament Speaker Rewaz Fayaq at the Kurdish presidential palace in Erbil.

The Kurdistan Region presidency said Macron had reaffirmed in the letter that France would continue to support the Region in its fight against terrorism and in developing economic and social relations.

Macron also sent two separate letters to Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi and President Barham Salih, stressing that France would remain a “key partner” for Iraq.
