PUK President says people’s will prevailed during parliament’s latest session

SULAIMANI (ESTA) — Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) President Bafel Talabani on Tuesday hailed the parliamentary faction of PUK for foiling a “plot” amid the latest session of the parliament.

Earlier yesterday, Talabani welcomed the PUK parliamentary faction along with Parliamentary Speaker Rewaz Fayaq in Sulaimani City, a statement by his press office read.

The President highlighted Monday’s session of the Kurdistan Parliament and hailed the brave historical role of the PUK faction, extending his full support for the Parliamentary Speaker, according to the statement.

PUK’s Talabani asserted that the PUK has foiled a plot to degrade the parliament’s dignity. “People’s will prevailed.”

Last Monday, the Kurdistan Parliament convened in a contentious bid to reactivate the election commission ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary election.

The session descended into chaos as fighting broke out between MPs for the PUK and the rival Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

The Parliamentary Speaker immediately postponed the session for an indefinite time. “No outcome will have legal or procedural value after the adjournment,” She said.

“The PUK has been always eager for national agreement between the political parties to amend the electoral law,” Talabani said.

He reaffirmed that the election commission must be reactivated far from self-imposition, underscoring the quota seats to not be used for deciding the fateful issues.

“From the very beginning we have demanded minorities to be distanced from political and party conflicts,” He said.

“Despite the problem occurred in the parliament, the PUK insists on its unwavering beliefs,” He added.

“The PUK’s door is open for dialogues that aim to resolve the disagreements and holding a pure election on time.”
